Why Camera Settings Aren’t Just Technical — They’re Creative

A lot of people think camera settings are just numbers you have to memorize. Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, the “exposure triangle” we’ve all heard about. But here’s the thing: these settings aren’t just technical controls. They’re creative tools, and learning to use them with intention is where photography really starts to feel like art.

Aperture: More Than Just Light

Yes, aperture controls how much light hits your sensor. But it also decides how your photo feels. A wide aperture (like f/2.8) gives you that dreamy, blurred background where the subject pops out in sharp focus. It’s perfect for wildlife in Costa Rica, where isolating a bird against a busy jungle backdrop makes all the difference. A narrow aperture (like f/11) keeps everything sharp, which is why landscape photographers love it for sweeping rainforest views or coastal sunsets.

Shutter Speed: Freezing or Flowing

Shutter speed is the setting that lets you choose between stopping action and showing motion. Set it fast, 1/2000 of a second, and you can freeze a toucan mid-flight, every feather crisp. Slow it down, maybe half a second, and suddenly a waterfall turns silky, showing the flow of water rather than just the splash. Both are true representations of what happened, but they tell very different stories.

ISO: The Balancing Act

ISO gets a bad rap because people associate it with noise. And yes, cranking it up can make your images grainy. But ISO is what lets you keep shooting when the light fades. Think of a night scene at the finca with fireflies glowing in the dark, raising your ISO gives you a chance to capture that moment. It’s not cheating, it’s adapting.

Why It Matters

Settings aren’t just math problems to solve for correct exposure. They’re choices that shape mood, focus, and energy in a photograph. Once you start thinking of them as creative levers instead of dials, you’ll see how much control you actually have over your storytelling.
